An Explanation About The Medication Our Doctors May Provide

If the doctor thinks it will help your transition to a new eating plan, you will be prescribed specially licensed and controlled appetite suppressant medication as part of your treatment. More than a billion prescriptions of these medications have been issued, and they have one of the best safety records.

WARNING: Please note these medications are NOT available to buy from us online - you must come into the clinic and see the doctor before these medications can be prescribed. A recent MHRA report shows that around 50% of medications bought online are fake. Only by coming to a Healthcare Commission registered clinic and seeing a GMC registered doctor face-to-face can you be sure of receiving the right medication.

By reducing your hunger, your transition to a new and healthier eating plan is made easier. When combined with the eating plan which our doctor will select for you, and aided perhaps by some extra exercise, you will be well placed to achieve a permanent loss of weight and to maintain that lower weight into the future.

Diethylpropion (Tenuate Dospan)

This is one of our most popular and successful appetite suppressants, and has been in safe use by millions of patients for more than forty years. Now called diethylpropion, you may have also heard of this medication under the name of tenuate or tenuate dospan.

The 75 mg formulation is a large tablet which can be broken in half to reduce the dosage or to spread the effect across the day.

Diethylpropion is also available as a small 25 mg tablet, often used for new patients.

Phentermine and Ionamin (Duramin)

Our other longest established medication is phentermine, which has also been in use for many years. Phentermine comes in both tablet and slow release capsule form.

You may know the capsules by their old names of Ionamin or Duramin.

New patients will usually begin with the 15mg strength, and at the doctor's discretion may then be switched to the 30 mg dose.

Side Effects

Please be aware that ALL medications have potential side effects. Weight loss medications are no different. Our doctor will advise you of the possible side effects of the particular medication that is prescribed to you.

Most side effects pass in two or three days. If they do not, stop taking the medication and call the clinic to speak to one of our doctors.

Other Prescription Only Medications

Reductil

Reductil ® is one of the newer appetite suppressants used for reducing weight and maintaining this weight loss. Unlike other medications, Reductil ® tends to make you feel full rather than not hungry. Reductil® has been used by over 1.5 million patients.

Weight management with Reductil ® is most effective when integrated with a carefully monitored programme of healthy eating, physical activity and life-style modification. New patients are typically started on the 10mg strength then, at the doctor's discretion, may be changed to the 15mg strength.

We prescribe only genuine Reductil made by Abbott Laboratories. We do not use any of the cheap imported 'generic' versions or, of course, the many counterfeit versions sold over the internet. You can be assured that you are receiving the genuine article at our clinics.

Xenical

Xenical® is a lipase inhibitor rather than an appetite suppressant, which prevents enzymes in the digestive tract from breaking down the dietary fats you eat into the smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. As the undigested triglycerides are not absorbed, the reduced calorific intake can have a positive effect on weight control. With Xenical ® absorption of fat is decreased by about 30 per cent.

During a one year trial, patients treated with Xenical ® and a reduced calorie diet lost twice as much weight as those on a reduced calorie diet alone. Xenical ® is more generally recommended if you are considerably overweight - at least 30% above ideal weight (body mass index of 30 or greater) and also for those at least 20% above ideal weight (body mass index of 27 or greater) who also have other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, or diabetes, or are unable to take appetite suppressants.
